Recent Research Advances on the Buckling Behavior of High Strength and Ultra-high Strength Steel Structures

High strength (nominal yield strength fy≥420MPa) and ultra-high strength (nominal yield strength fy≥460MPa) steel structures, which have many advantages such as small member sizes, light structure weight, high safety, low engineering cost and environmental protection, have begun to be applied in building, bridge and tower structures. The research on the buckling behavior of such kind steel structures is still at the initial stage, and a few welded section column compression tests were conducted in foreign countries. In this paper, recent research advances on the buckling behavior of high strength and ultra-high strength steel columns, which were conducted by Tsinghua University and Delft University of Technology, are introduced, including the review and experimental study on high strength steel engineering applications, material properties, the residual stress and the buckling behavior of columns, as well as numerical study on the buckling. Based on the research works it is indicated that modern high strength fine grain structural steels have excellent material properties, and the buckling behavior of high strength columns improved a lot in general because of the effects of imperfections such as nonstraightness and residual stresses less severe for high strength steel members, and it has been proven that the residual stress to steel yield strength ratio decreases based on the experimental study. Generally, the research works on buckling behavior of high strength and ultra-high strength steel columns introduced in this paper provide significant basis and research findings for the future study, including the researches on the mechanical behavior and design method of high strength and ultra-high strength steel structures. Besides, it can also be helpful for the application of high strength and ultra-high strength steels to be applied widely in engineering in China.
