Adopting Paivio's functional role and task analysis framework to examine imagery use in sport

@@ Introduction Imagery use is the manner in which individuals employ imagery to learn and develop skills, and to facilitate performance of those skills (Morris, Spittle, & Watt, 2005). One area of interest is the identification of when and why athletes use imagery based on the functional role analysis framework developed by Paivio (1985). This involves a 2 x 2 classification where imagery can mediate behaviour through either a cognitive (e.g., skill and strategy rehearsal) or motivational (e.g., self-confidence, arousal) role, operating at either a general or specific level.
