Recent advances in virtualization technologies have allowed telecommunications carriers to apply virtualization-based operation support systems. By separating logical view of computing resources from physical view, virtualization is expected to help consolidate/simplify existing complex telecommunication systems, improve utilization rate and reduce Total Cost of Ownership. While the benefits of virtualization are compelling, potential drawbacks also must be identified before actual deployment. Without proper evaluation, virtualization cannot benefit operation support systems. From the viewpoint of operation support systems, this paper (1) analyses performance issues (CPU, network throughput and Disk I/O) associated with Xen virtualization. Given the current technology level and development progress, this paper (2) identifies applicable areas for virtualization-based operation support systems and addresses suggested system architecture.
