The compressive strength perpendicular to the grain is one of those wood properties that are important for structural design but are difficult to tackle due to its semi-plastic behaviour. It depends on deformation, the specimen type and loading condition. For long no common definition for the standard compressive strength was agreed. A comprehensive survey of research work is given given by Augustin and Schickhofer [1], Kollmann [2], Gehri [3], Madsen [4] and Blass and Gorlacher [5]. Some of the empirical models proposed were by Madsen [4], Blass and Gorlacher [5] and Riberholt [6]. A physical model was presented by Van der Put [7] in 1988, based on plasticity theory. He showed the ability and accuracy of his model by evaluation of old test data. This papers compares this physical model with the empirical model by Blass and Gorlacher [5], which currently is proposed for adoption in Eurocode 5. The test data used for the evaluation is not only the results by Van der Put quoted from [7] but new data recently became available is added to lend ore credibility to the analyse. It is concluded that the empirical model is conservative and less reliable compared to the physical model by Van der Put.
