Fundamental research into Adhesive screw bolted for glue laminated timber connection

Adhesive Screw Bolted for Glue Laminated Timber Connection (=ASC) is adapted for the joint part of the timber moment frame. In the way of ASC, at the joint part a bolt is installed in a hole drilled beforehand through each laminate timber. And then the bolt is fixed with the adhesive. The efficacy of the adhesive has improved due to progress of science and technology. The high quality of adhesive can assure high rigidity and durable strength of ASC. We have been making a fundamental study of ASC since 2007. First, we experimented monotonous tension on ASC and found that tension strength of ASC is proportional to adherence area of wood and the adhesive. And we knew that tension strength of ASC is easily calculated from shear strength of wood. Second, we conducted pure bending experiment on ASC and found that there is no difference in the data of strength of ASC between the monotonous tension experiment and the pure bending experiment, considering the difference of shear strength of wood. And it turned out that destruction is caused also on the compression joint increasing at the adhesion area, though we surmised that destruction would be caused on the tension joint with bending load. In earthquakes, the shearing force acts on the joint part in the timber moment frame. But the shearing force-proof performance of ASC is not still assessed exactly. We'll search the shearing force-proof performance of ASC and establish a design formula of Timber frame that uses ASC.
