A Manufacturing Problem was organized for the first time at the OSA's 2001 Topical Meeting on Optical Interference Coating (OIC), in Banff, Canada. The participants in a Manufacturing Problem are free to select the thin film design and manufacturing process that they feel will permit them to obtain the best match between the measured and the specified performance. This article reviews the first three Manufacturing Problems. In 2001 the object was to see how closely a filter with a specified irregular spectral transmittance and reflectance can be produced for near-normal incidence of light. At the 2004 OIC meeting, the goal was to produce a polarizing beam splitter for use with light incident at 60°. The aim of the 2007 problem was to produce a coating in which the colors of the transmitted and of the two reflected beams were grey, yellow and blue, respectively, and were of equal luminance.
