The objective of this work was to develop an impact modifier to improve the impact strength of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA). Graft copolymers of PLLA and polyethylene (PE) were synthesized via the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide initiated by PE modified with hydroxyl groups (macroPE). The macroPE was prepared via the metallocene catalyzed copolymerization of ethylene and 5-hexen-1-ol. DSC and DMA on the copolymers and PLLA blends indicated a two-phase polymer system. The blends exhibited significantly increased loss moduli and maximum tan 5s when compared to virgin PLLA, indicating a high probability of increased impact toughness, while the storage moduli of the blends remained approximately constant.
