Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared from poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO). As-received PBO was pyrolyzed at 1123 K and then physically activated with CO_2 at 1073 K to various burn-off (BO) degrees. The porous texture of the resulting ACFs was characterized by physical adsorption of N_2 at 77 K and CO_2 at 273 K. Unlike previous findings with other high-crystallinity polymers, the obtained materials were essentially supermicroporous with a significant contribution of narrow mesopores. The pore volume increased and the pore size distribution was widened with increasing BO, following the typical behaviour of carbons from many common precursors.
