The Co-generation power plants need a cooling Tower to circulate the cold water through the condenser. In a steam power plant about 4800KJ heat is rejected to the circulating water for each KWH of energy produced. Thus by using condenser the exhaust pressure of steam is decreased below atmospheric pressure thus increasing the out put and the efficiency. Thus cooling Tower is one of the important equipment in the power plants. The water used must be treated mainly to prevent corrosion and sale formation in the tube bundle. Also chocking due to Algae formation and bacteria growth in PVC Fill of cooling tower is observed. Clean condenser helps to maintain the vacuum & operate the unit at full efficiency. Proper method of water treatment must be adopted to improve the cooling efficiency and power output. A case study of cooling water related problems & treatment aspects of 6 MW Co-generation Plant of M/s Bhimashankar S S K Ltd., Ambegaon, Pune, is discussed in the foregoing sections.
