A Laboratory scale Up flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor (UASB) was designed for the anaerobic treatment of sugar factory effluent. Anaerobic bacterial sludge was used in the reactor for the effluent treatment along with the required nutrients for the growth of anaerobic bacteria. Microbiological and physico-chemical analysis were conducted at different time interval to track the efficiency of the process over a period of time. The physico-chemical analysis results reveal that an effective reduction (around 85 to 90% reduction in BOD and COD values) in all the quality parameters of the effluent can be achieved using UASB reactor. The economic advantage of anaerobic treatment over aerobic treatment of sugar industry effluent was also found to be significant
