BIODIESEL FROM PINARI SEEDS (STERCULIA FOETIDA L.)

In the present condition everybody is trying to find an alternative source for bio-fuel to overcome the global warming. In this article, the author has studied a new non-edible oil source for the production of biodiesel. The seeds of Pinari trees (Sterculia foetida L.) are found to contain non-edible oil in the range of 30-35 per cent. The oil extracted from the seeds were analysed for the biodiesel characteristics after transesterification and was found suitable as a biodiesel. The details of the plant, extraction of oil, analyses of raw oil, transesterification, use of biodiesel in the internal combustion engine and its performance are studied in detail and discussed.
