Cyclic variations in sugar production of the country are well-known fact. The adverse effects of this up & downs in sugar production can be minimized by two ways. First, use of supplementary crop like sugarbeet during lower production & stocks. Second, during excess production & consequently higher stocks, part of excess sugar can be diverted to fuel ethanol production, considering prevailing cost of sugar & ethanol and enhancing exports by way of production of sulphurless sugar in the form of VHP raw & refined sugar, which have higher demand over plantation white sugar in the international trade.With the advantage of location in coastal region Maharashtra Sugar Mills have made a successful attempt of production and export of VHP raw sugar. This has resulted in stabilizing white sugar price in the domestic market. The success story of production & export of VHP raw sugar, which has launched India as one of major exporter in world raw sugar trade and the experience of VHP raw sugar production, difficulties faced etc. is given in this article.
