System Operator Interfaces to Active Network Management Schemes in Future Distribution Networks

In the last decade, the interest in and development of distributed generation (DG) in the UK has increased considerably. Large penetrations of DG are threatening network integrity, and resulting pressures on voltage levels, power flows and fault levels are risking security and quality of supply. Cost of network reinforcement and substation equipment upgrades will be passed on to generators and DG connections will become more uneconomic as time progresses. Consequently, distribution networks must evolve from their traditional passive role to actively managed systems [1] if they are to accommodate these connections and their inherent issues whilst remaining economically viable. Increased levels of actively managed DG and associated network automation will affect control room operational activities by increasing the amount and diversity of information that must be processed and control action that must be subsequently executed. This paper will discuss possible future network conditions and the effects on control room operations, whilst exploring promising solutions to support control engineers in managing these new control room drivers.
