A pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) system has been developed in this research to investigate a potential reuse of the treated department store wastewater, especially for toilet-flushing purpose. The experiment used raw wastewater from department store and then investigated the performance stability of the submerged membrane bioreactor system, treatment efficiency and quality of treated water, when keeping sludge age of the system at 50 days. The intermittent aeration mode was applied here to make possible switching between the aerobic and anoxic condition. Therefore, the SMBR system could simultaneously remove organic matters and nitrogen in only one single reactor. The system could also achieve removal efficiencies of higher than 99% in terms of turbidity and SS. Moreover, stable treatment effiencies of 80-93% for total nitrogen and 97% for COD could be obtained through the long-run experiment. Treated effluent had average color of 0.99 SU and fecal coliform bacteria was not detectable. Furthermore, the quality of treated effluent could reach the standard of reclaimed water quality for non-potable use as toilet flushing purpose.
