Contamination of butyltin compounds in surface sediments inside major harbors of Jeju Island, Korea

Levels of t-BTs in surface sediments inside Jeju, Songsanpo, Seogwipo and Hallim Harbors, were in the range of 81-1356 ng g~(-1) (mean 676 ng g~(-1)), 63-420 ng g~(-1) (167 ng g~(-1)), 35-297 ng g~(-1) (167 ng g~(-1)) and 125-841 ng g~(-1) (147 ng g~(-1)), respectively. The main species among BTs was DBT and MBT in Jeju Harbor, and MBT in the other harbors. The spatial distribution of t-BTs inside Jeju Harbor showed a general trend of increased concentrations towards the harbor ends, however, inside the other harbors, the distribution of BTs showed no distinct spatial trends with regard to anticipated point sources.The sedimentary t-BTs may be relatively highly correlated with organic carbon content and mud content for Jeju Harbor, but no correlations between t-BTs and each of organic carbon content and particle size distribution were obtained for the other harbors.The correlations between BTs, and t-BTs and each of TBT, DBT and MBT, were very high (≥ 0.73), indicating that DBT and MBT were mainly degraded from TBT based on antifouling paints of vessels etc., and other sources, such as DBT and MBT, could be ignored. The obtained BDI values inside all the harbors of Jeju Island were ≥ 2.0, indicating that BTs contamination in surface sediments were attributable to the TBT input and its degradation a relatively long ago.
