Occurrence of Arsenic and Manganese in Groundwater in the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam

Convincing evidences were found for the dependence of groundwater As level on spatial parameters (distance and well depth) and hydro-geochemical parameters (pH, TOC, Mn and Fe levels). As and Mn are reversely correlated to each other. That is the reason why groundwater samples concurrently containing very low As levels and very high Mn levels are very common in the study area. However, it is still possible to observe samples that show high levels of both As and Mn. Consequently, only 14 % of groundwater samples in the two study provinces meet the guideline for both As and Mn in drinking water. This characteristic should be considered when applying remediation technologies in order to assure high removal efficiency.
