Low Scorch High Efficiency Flame Retardants for Flexible Polyurethane Foams

Since the phase out of pentabrominated diphenyloxide flame retardants in 2004, the flexible foam industry has been actively looking for cost effective replacements that meet flammability, scorch and physical property requirements. In addition to these requirements, product sustainability (environmental and human health) has become an increasingly important criteria for flexible foam manufacturers in choosing a flame retardant solution. This year, we have commercialized a new product - Fyrol? FR-7- which has proven to be a viable, cost effective replacement for current halogenated flame retardants. In addition, we have four new developmental flame retardant additives for polyether flexible foams which offer further improvements to address the needs of the flexible foam industry. These phosphorusbased additives include halogen-free products (E07-11 and E06-18) and halogenated (E06-17 and E07-10). We are working with flexible foam manufacturers to commercialize these products. This article will present flammability results and scorch performance of these development products and a new experimental method on measuring scorch.
