New Class of Hydrophilic MDI Prepolymers for Industrial and Consumer Applications

Hydrophilic polyurethane (PU) prepolymers have been commercialized by Dow under the trade name of HYPOL?. These hydrophilic prepolymers upon reaction with excess aqueous phase (water with surfactant, additives, compounds containing an active hydrogen, etc.) renders hydrophilic foams for applications such as bath sponges, facial sponges, ear plugs, horticulture, and wound dressings. Most of these applications require very good wet tear properties. Despite the limited wet tear properties of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) prepolymer foams, TDI prepolymers are still extensively used mainly due to the slow back end reactivity of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) prepolymers. In this paper, we discuss and present new class of hydrophilic MDI prepolymers with improved back end reactivity that also retains the wet tear properties of typical MDI systems. A technical hypothesis was put forward, and new hydrophilic MDI prepolymers were synthesized at lab and pilot scale and validated for bath sponge, horticulture and comfort applications. Dow expects that development of these new hydrophilic MDI prepolymers can help fulfill the need for prepolymer systems with improved wet tear performance and productivity required for industrial and consumer applications.
