Electric Mold Carriers Boost Productivity in PUR Processing

Mold carrier performance is one of the factors that impact the productivity of a PUR processing plant. Shorter cycle times, as a result of fast, simultaneous movements, help to improve mold carrier performance, as do highquality, reliable drive systems that minimize downtime and increase system availability. KraussMaffei has developed an innovative new electric mold carrier. The extremely well-built, low-maintenance electric drive system compares very favorably with other mold carrier concepts. With no hydraulic drives, operation is energy-efficient and clean. Easy access and freedom of movement for the operator are part of the system’s excellent ergonomics. This paper will provide an overview of this innovative new electric mold carrier, including: 1. The purpose-built belt drive capable of high-speed movements. 2. How the system ensures parallel movements at all times. 3. A comparison of maintenance requirements for various drive concepts, including toothed belts, chain drives, and circulating spindle drives. 4. Optimized ergonomics via tilting capabilities. 5. Operations sequencing and the sensor system that tracks these movements. 6. Controls programming via the "teach" functions. At present, the main application for electric mold carriers is back-foaming of vehicle instrument panels. Other large-area PUR parts are in the development stages.
