Alstom’s KNX? technology has been shown to be an effective mercury oxidation agentenabling significant mercury capture in existing wet and dry air pollution controlsystems. The KNX technology uses a patented process in which a bromine-containingchemical is added to the fuel prior to combustion in a coal-fired boiler. KNX addition tothe coal is a simple and reliable process requiring very little capital investment.Numerous prior tests under Alstom, EPRI, and the DOE sponsorship demonstratedmercury removals of up to 90%. These demonstrations have recently been supplementedwith two test series conducted at a 600 MW SCR/ESP/WFGD PRB-fired unit. Coal pileto-stack mercury reductions of over 90% were consistently obtained with the addition ofonly three gallons per hour of KNX into the approximately 700,000 pounds per hour ofcoal flow. Further long-term testing is in progress at this and several other units.
