Biocompatibility study of the mucosal formulations

This study was aimed to investigate the mechanisms that lead to a suitable host response of the vaginal mucosa upon exposure to EDTA, synergistic microbicidal agent. We examined the levels of ICAM-1 and COX-2 mRNA as a surrogate marker in human vaginal cell lines upon exposure to EDTA or IL-1b. ICAM expression in human cervical cell lines increased as EDTA concentration increased. Inflammatory expression of ICAM modulated by estrogen suggests its beneficial role of estrogen in the regulation and maintenance of vaginal homeostasis. Identification and quantification of specific surrogate markers for inflammatory response evoked by microbicides and their regulation by estrogen will lead to an efficient strategy against AIDS through intravaginally delivered microbicidal treatment.
