Herbert Hoover Dike (HHD) encircles Lake Okeechobee in south central Florida. Lake Okeechobee has the distinction of being the second largest fresh water lake wholly within the United States and measures approximately 720 square miles. The HHD was originally authorized in response to hurricanes of 1926 and 1928 which caused over 3,000 deaths and was constructed in two general phases over the course of more than 30 years.
