Lamina Variability Method for Determining Laminate Basis Values

A method called the Lamina Variability Method (LVM) is described, whichassumes laminate variability to be equal to lamina variability for a particular failuremode. The prime assumption for applying the LVM is that the intrinsic strengthvariability of the laminate (small) dataset is no greater than the strength variability ofthe specimen for which considerable (lamina) data is available. The applicability ofthe method is verified by a large lamina and laminate test program that shows theinherent conservatism of the method and its limitation.
