MATERIAL DEPENDENCE OF A PASSIVE HOUSE IN CASE OF FIRE

It is already shown that there are some complications for the fire brigades in case of fire for a passive house. In particular for reasons of accessibility from the different insulation layers (fire from out to inside). In previous Fire and material conferences we’ve seen an approach with a CFD calculation, but this approach needs many scenarios to be validated. At that moment there were no comments about the most important questions; is there a raised risk on back draft? And; is this depending on the pre-formed construction material? The aim of this paper is to make our point of view clear by aid of some case studies (new passive buildings). In that way this is an extended version of the paper presented at the passive house platform in Brussels 2011. It will be shown by means of a dependable 2-zone (generally applicable) model of those case studies, that some simple rules can avoid dramatically escalating natural fires. The same approach or model is used for a normal insulated building to create “reference” buildings. The comparison between the results of the numerical models will show that the conventional fire curve is still a “safe side” conservative approach. More important are the recommendations in sense of applied materials, geometry and technical equipment. The study is done for the following construction materials; concrete, masonry and wooden or steel framed structures.
