Predicting the extent of foundation grouting required for a dam generally creates significant turmoil for the design engineer and may present a large degree of financial uncertainty for the Owner. Grout takes are highly sensitive to the properties of the geologic units present and are often impacted by local variations in the formation. This paper will present the evolution of the grouting program for Rueter-Hess Dam from design through production grouting. Foundation grouting was generally performed in four phases: initial geotechnical field investigation, design, field test sections, and production grouting.
