Based on the success of several Ariane 5 missions (test satellites, on-board video system etc.) Kayser-Threde has developed a flexible concept for a multipurpose In-Flight Monitoring System (FMS) for launchers due to the fact, that during launcher qualification and for so-called technological flights (post-qualification) a significant higher number of measurement data has to be monitored and transmitted to ground than during nominal operation flights. Even during operational flights there might be the need to have more in-flight monitoring data than the nominal launcher on-board system is able to acquire and to transmit to ground. This multi-purpose Flight Monitoring System includes an Environmental Measurement System (EMS) in combination with an Online Camera system (OCAM) and an Electro-Pyrotechnic Order capability (EPO) offering a complete FMS system for in-flight monitoring. The system consists of a complete infrastructure with own power subsystem, data acquisition and signal conditioning subsystem and telemetry unit. This additional unit can be placed wherever respective envelope is available, typically in the payload bay or on the upper stage.
