For the purpose of realizing 1100kV AC (UHV) power transmission to meet the demandsfor electricity in future Japan, the GIS-arrester was developed and its high reliability wasconfirmed by a long-term performance verification test. GIS-arrester is a key component todetermine the insulation level of 1100kV AC power transmission lines and substationequipments.As part of a series of activities started in the middle of 1970s, anticipating thecommercialization of 1100kV AC power transmission by the Special Committee on UHVconsisting of learned scholars, government agencies, electric power companies, CentralResearch Institutes of Electric Power Industry, and manufacturers concerned, the GISarresterwith the protection performance of the world top level was developed with applyingthe ZnO elements developed and commercialized in Japan.This paper describes the application effects, duty, specifications, a lot of progress ofdevelopment and results of verification tests for the 1100kV AC GIS-arresters.
