The optimization problem of a safety isolating transformer is presented. This benchmark meets the requirements of engineers and scientists working with discrete and non-classable design variables, such as in the first part of the design process during the choice of structures and materials (embodiment design). It is dedicated to highlight the most efficient multi-level and combinatorial optimization methods. Two models are given. The first one is based on 3D FEA and gives a good accuracy with a huge computation time. The second is an analytical model that may speed-up the optimization process.
