Simulation of different diameter particles concentration distribution in cyclone separator

The different diameter particles concentration distribution in a volute cyclone separator which diameter is 300 mm has been numerically simulated using a modified non-isotropy RSM model and the Lagrange approach on the platform of commercial CFD software package, FLUENT 6.1. The results show the most of smaller particles are separated in the cyclone separator cone section, but the most of bigger particles are separated in annular space and cylinder section of separation space. An unsteady helix dust strand near the cyclone wall and a dust ring near the cyclone top plate for larger particles are observed from the simulation. The shortcut flow is detected below the vortex finder 0.25 D where the particles concentration was high, especially for the smaller particles. The axial profiles of the particles concentration show that there exists serious particles entrainment within the the range of 0.5 D above the dust discharge.
