SIV (Swine Influenza virus): Field clinic presentations, interaction with other pathogens and its role in the PRDC

Swine Influenza virus (Influenza type A), SIV, is an old-known pathogen that has been involved in many pig respiratory outbreaks in Asia ever since. Very few years ago SIV was not considered as a main participant pathogen in PRDC (Porcine respiratory disease complex) cases due to probably the presence of other more popular, complex and recently implanted PRDC pathogens (PRRSV, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, PCV-2). However, prevalence of SIV challenges in growing fattening pigs seems to be increasing, as well as its participation in PRDC cases. The increasing detection of SIV threat could be either due to either vet practitioners are more generally concerned to Influenza viruses (important to take into account contemporaneous outbreaks of avian flu, which is materialized with the use of more diagnostic tools to detect SIV) and / or due to SIV is actually playing more frequently a main role in the PRDC; the fact is that SIV challenges are more frequently diagnosed.
