ALTIMETRY AND THE INTEGRATED OCEAN OBSERVING SYSTEM

A central objective for future altimeter missions is to provide data required by operational oceanography integrated systems (I.e. that use in-situ and satellite observations together with models and data assimilation to provide an integrated description of the ocean). We review the development of global operational oceanography and the unique contribution of satellite altimetry. Requirements and recommendations for future altimeter systems are then discussed.
