The largest contributing factor to an average American's carbon footprint is an automobile. Hence, exploring an alternative to the current automobile technology is of great importance. Introduction of electric vehicles into our economy is eminent because it is capable of utilizing clean energy. Clean energy is sustainable, renewable and has net zero emissions. Before the industrial revolution, energy was spent essentially for basic life and survival. Our increased wealth and productivity has resulted in a significant demand for energy. To meet the needs of increasing world populations, a large percentage of energy must come from clean energy sources. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed - is the first law of thermodynamics. It tells us how energy can be translated from one form to another. The paper will illustrate how an average adult will have to climb over 100 times a standard flight of stairs to equal the energy from one 100W light bulb operated for 1 hour. This energy translation is dramatic when we consider the automobile (internal combustion engine) and how we use that energy today. Using "conventional" electric energy as opposed to using "clean" electric energy to charge batteries will be discussed. There is a significant advantage to all electric vehicles in that the use of power generated from renewable and sustainable sources can be utilized.
