Preliminary costs and feasibility economics are presented for a 9.5 mt/yr CO2 capture, transportation and storage project in the Permian coals of the Bowen Basin, Australia. Total capital costs for a 44yr life project are estimated at A$2.8 billion, allowing for a 250 km pipeline, conversion of 500 wells to injection, and field distribution and separation. Operating costs have been estimated on a life-cycle basis at A$35/t of CO2 stored. The total life-cycle cost of the project (undiscounted and excluding cost of capital) is estimated at A$42/t CO2 stored and A$57/t CO2 avoided. The CO2 stored would amount to 380 mt. After revenue credits for the enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM), the net cost is reduced by 46%, to A$22/t CO2 stored and A$30/t CO2 avoided. This net cost can be reduced to zero with a gas price of A$5/GJ. Alternatively, the same zero cost can be achieved with a CO2 credit of A$30/t avoided. The potential CO2 leakage, at a maximum of 0.033%, is considered negligible due to the inherently-mitigating design of the ECBM process and site.
