For carbon capture and storage to be widely accepted by governments and communities as a legitimate greenhouse gas mitigating technology it must be safely demonstrated. The Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) is one of the world's leading collaborative research organisations focused on carbon dioxide (CO_2) capture and geological storage. The CO2CRC Demonstration Program aims to demonstrate to the Australian community that the geological storage of CO_2 is technically feasible and the injected CO_2 can be effectively monitored. The Otway Basin Pilot Project is a CO2CRC initiative that will demonstrate the capture, compression, transportation, injection, monitoring and verification of CO_2 in Australia for the first time. The Project plans to process and compress CO_2 from an existing well in a reservoir that was never produced, and transport it 3 to 4 km by pipeline to injection in a secure nearby depleted gas reservoir. The design of the associated capture facility needs to meet the requirements of the research team and be safe and economical. The source well, located in rural Victoria, is rich in CO_2 (over 85%) which makes it a cheap and safe source of CO_2 for demonstration purposes. The Project proposes to inject 3 MMscfd of CO_2 into the nearby reservoir, where over the life of the Project, approximately 100,000 tonnes of CO_2 will be permanently stored.
