Social Acceptance of Carbon Dioxide Sequestration in The Netherlands

This paper assesses the status of societal acceptance of geological carbon dioxide sequestration in the Netherlands by investigating the opinion and attitude of stakeholders that are important for the implementation of carbon dioxide sequestration in the Netherlands. The organizations chosen represent parliament, government, industry and environmental non-governmental organizations. On the basis of the output of interviews with the relevant stakeholders workshops were designed about the fundamental question whether carbon dioxide sequestration should be used to combat climate change, and stated that this technology is to be used, what conditions are posed for acceptance of carbon dioxide sequestration. Based on this, the conclusion can be drawn that there is a positive fundamental attitude towards carbon dioxide sequestration in the Netherlands as far as the stakeholders are concerned. This acceptance carbon dioxide sequestration by government, industry and environmental NGOs, is however conditional. These conditions are: safety, temporality, simplicity, financial stimuli, cooperation and commitment, and public acceptance. The consensus about these conditions is remarkable, as well as on the actions that were suggested to meet these conditions.
