Requirements for Sustainable Carbon Capture and Storage

Most of the publications and discussion on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) concentrate on technological aspects and feasibility questions. Given the fact, that the concept of CCS is relatively young, this is a normal step in the development process of a new technology. However, with regard to possible implications of CCS and the challenges of climate change the debate has to be supplemented by a sustainability dimension. The new technology can only contribute to mitigating climate change, if it is accepted by the general public. Public acceptance may accelerate or reduce the speed at which any new technology penetrates the market. A lack of public support may even stop a new technology from entering the market.
