There is a large need to approve equipment, technologies, and experiments in real space environment. With the delays and constraints (space shuttle) in the manned space area this need is even more demanding. Kayser- Threde (KT) wants to serve this need via an experimental platform for Ariane 5. This experimental platform is derived from the successful MAQSAT-B2 and its instrument platform which accommodates the complete instrumentation and the experiment. The Kayser-Threde Ariane Platform (KAP) provides experimental payload mass of up to 220 kg having a complete mass of 600 kg. Three baseline mission scenarios have been defined: 3 hours (for measuring the launcher environment and to expose experiments/technology demonstrators to the launcher environment), 3 days for short experiments, and 1 year for long-time experiments. The two short-time missions, especially the 3 days mission, are the aim of the newly developed CTS 3000 (Compact Telemetry System) data handling system. This system is derived from the TEXUS/MAXUS project development where an autonomous data handling system with TM/TC is implemented to support the payloads.
