Space projects cost and schedule constraints and performance requirements drive the utilization of commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) components and emerging technologies in data handling systems. Two rugged PC systems based on military grade Versa Module Eurocard (VME) boards and on a PC 104 system have been developed and qualified for the operation on board the International Space Station (ISS) in the framework of ESA’s European Physiology Modules facility (EPM) project. This paper presents the approach for use and qualification of the COTS systems in EPM.
