In this study, the emulsification of rosin and water was investigated without the help of conventional surfactants. The rosin was dissolved in equal weight of benzene forming a 50% (w/w) rosin solution, which was used as the oil phase while magnesium aluminuM hydroxide and ethyl cellulose were used as emulsifiers/stabilizers. It was discovered that the rosin solution and water could be emulsified by means of magnesium aluminum hydroxide, yet the emulsion only kept stable for a very short time. When the magnesium aluminum hydroxide was applied together with ethyl cellulose, the stability of the rosin emulsion was improved. However, with increasing the ethyl cellulose level, the viscosity of the rosin emulsion increased while the conductivity decreased. For emulsifying rosin solution and water, the suitable mass ratio of ethyl cellulose and magnesium aluminum hydroxide was 1:1.
