Reinforcing effects of the new cationic starch and the acrylamide grafted cationic starch by free radical polymerization on papers were investigated. As a strengthening agent for paper, the acrylamide grafted cationic starch has a strong influence on the properties of the finished products. Contents of the etherizing agent and acrylamide are critical to the properties of papers, while the content of the etherizing agent has an optimum value. The acrylamide modified cationic starch has a strong effect on the reinforcement of papers. The reinforcement is not only dependent on the amount of functional groups of modified cationic starch, but also on the total interactions between the functional groups of the modified cationic starch and those of the fibers. The reinforcement increases with the interactions between the functional groups of the modified cationic starch and the fibers.
