In order to greatly reduce ORing diode power loss in a power redundant system, an active ORing solution is proposed to replace a Schottky diode with an Nchannel MOSFET. The MOSFET is controlled by an application-specific controller IC. This IC's offset voltage, hysteresis, propagation delay times, and drive capability are optimized for the speed, stability, and noise immunity. A unique FET check feature was implemented to improve the reliability of the redundant power system. With the proposed active ORing solution, the power loss can be reduced by as much as 85%, resulting in huge power saving, size and cost reduction and improved reliability of the redundant power system.
