Annual as well as monthly time-series of the morphological evolution of a small study area in the German Wadden Sea were used to study the reasons for morphodynamic model shortcomings. The long-term morphodynamic trend shows the filling of a tidal channel and retreat of the coastline. Monthly datasets reveal that in contrast to almost no bathymetric changes during fair-weather periods, extreme events can be determined as the main morphodynamic drivers. Hence, highly parameterized boundary conditions as single "representative tides" cannot provide the necessary diversity of forcing to drive realistic morphodynamic model simulations. Instead, morphodynamic models should use open boundary conditions, which consider the variation in tidal and meteorological forcing rather than characteristic single tides.
