This paper provides a system approach to retrofit existing timber bridges by using prefabricated wood-concrete-composite elements. The retrofit of timber bridges serves various purposes. First of all, it allows for an increase in strength and stiffness of approximately 400 percent compared to the existing timber bridge. It also allows for an increase in bearing capacity due to concrete bearings. Furthermore, it provides a diaphragm that creates a lateral stiffness. The prefabricated concrete cross sections on top of the timber beams, in combination with an innovative moisture barrier between timber and concrete, provide a “cover” which prevents further moisture penetration of the existing timber beams.
