In the world of evolving development for large systems, one method is to develop the system in an iterative and incremental nature. The nature of this type of development cycle leads to overlapping efforts where the system will be under test for what has been designed and coded, yet the system will also be under design and code development for the next iteration. With this type of system development, there needs to be an approach for integration and test that will be effective while testing the system throughout its lifecycle. A test approach for this type of development can be found in a multi-level, multi-discipline test framework. The general concepts of how to accomplish this type of testing framework have been successfully used at Raytheon. This paper explores the test approach for the iterative and incremental software development model and the experiences currently on-going at Raytheon using this software development model.
