Organic maturity is one of the most important issues for evaluating hydrocarbon potential in oil exploration. Traditionally, vitrinite reflectance, Rock-Eval Pyrolysis and many other methods had been widely used for the evaluation of organic thermal maturation. Vitrinite reflectance measurement was especially considered as a reliable index for this purpose. However, the suppression of vitrinite reflectance was found to underestimate the maturity of kerogen, the estimation of hydrocarbon potential could thus be affected; the mechanism of suppression is still under discussion of today. Therefore, one of the purposes of this study is to find out the mechanism of this suppression by measuring reflectance from density centrifuge separated vitrinite. Furthermore, in order to exclude the influence on hydrocarbon potential during the process of separation, the influence of density liquid on Rock-Eval Pyrolysis needs to be evaluated before separation.
