Since the discovery of ammonium-bearing illite as a new mineral in coal tonstein, many scholars suggest that there is a close relationship between organic matter and the formation of ammonium-bearing illite. For the widely occurrence in coals, the research has a significant meaning in many areas: such as the cycle of N at geochemistry, research about time of anthracitilization, the formation and enrichment of methane. The samples of coal clay partings, so called tonsteins, were collected from Permain-Carboniferous strata in Xishan and Qinshui Coal field, middle of Shanxi province of North China, which have different coalification from fat coals to anthracite coals.
