The collaborative virtual assembly has three important characters that are interaction, process and distribution. However, the present assembly models can not support those characters effectively, whatever from the aspects of assembly constraints obtaining, modeling method, or model architecture. The abstract of assembly constraint is related to the support capability to the assembly unit's actions, and the generalization degree to the assembly information. Furthermore, the most assembly models can only present the internal relation but not provide functions to external. To solve the existing issues, this paper studies the semantic abstract of assembly constraint, i.e. captures the knowledge from the application field of mechanical product assembly and induces the basic semantics of assembly constraint. Then, this paper brings forward an extended object semantic modeling method, by which structures the assembly constraint with the function and behavior characters and constructs distributed assembly constraint semantic models, which are independent of the implementation and could offer a way for the interoperation between different applications. The experimental result of the VEADAM system shows that the distributed assembly constraint semantic models can effectively support the implement of distributed virtual assembly and adapt the variety of applications.
