In the present paper, a design method of MR dampers is developed to suppress the cable vibration. The MR dampersfor stay cables of the Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Bridge are designed by utilizing the proposed design methods. A stay cablemodel scaled down from the prototype stay cable is set up. An innovative control algorithm based on feedback of accelerationresponse at several points for active and semi-active control of mass-distributed dynamic systems, e.g. stay cables is proposed.Using the proposed control algorithm, the vibration control for the stay cable model attached with one MR damper and a series offield tests in the Shangdong Binzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge are carried out to investigate the control efficacy achieved bysemi-active MR dampers, “Passive-off” MR dampers and “Passive-on” MR dampers. Negative stiffness characteristics of activeand semi-active system for stay cables are investigated in detail. The effect of the negative stiffness on the cable vibration controlis addressed obviously. In addition, a mechanical model of the MR damper coupled with the stay cable is proposed to better predictthe MR damper response. According to experiences and lessons from the systemic investigations on stay cable vibration controlusing MR dampers, one combined sensing and smart damping control system for cable vibration based on microprocessor withDSP chip is proposed.
