This study presents a bridge damage identification scheme in time domain based ona pseudostatic formulation subtracted from equations of motion of a bridge-vehicle interactionsystem. The basic concept behind the damage identification is to detect damages directly from thechange in the element stiffness using the element stiffness index defined as the ratio of damagedbending rigidity of an element to undamaged one. The method considers the physical phenomenaof the bridge-vehicle interaction problem such as time varying coefficient in the system. Validationof the proposed method is determined through a numerical simulation on a steel plate girderbridge idealized as a set of beam elements. Observations through the numerical simulation revealthat the concept and procedure suggested in this paper may provide a method to extending engineeringchoice in damage detection of bridge structures, even though there remain many tasksto make the method practically applicable.
