A novel flame retardant as carbonization agent (CA) was synthesized. The flame retardant effect and thermal properties of a new IFR system for polypropylene (PP) were investigated via LOI, UL-94 test and TG. It was found that the PP composite containing ammonium polyphosphate(APP), melamine(MA) and CA shows good flame retardancy at a 30% loading level. The fire retardant effect was attributed to promoting the char yield according to the TG curves.
